Jerry Jeff Walker Headlines Stan Rogers Folk Festival
There are not very many performers that can have an effect on so many people when they have been dead for 25 years. Elvis, John Lennon and Buddy Holly come to mind and so does a folk singer from Ontario that ennobled the seafaring life of the Atlantic pr0vinces in song. Stan Rogers’ songs still influence musicians and his legend comes to life every summer at the
>Stan Roger’s Folk Festival.
In the words printed on the festival site:
“In his all-too-brief lifetime, Stan managed to influence a whole generation of performers, while contributing to the emerging popularity of the East Coast Music scene. Stan wasn’t born a Maritimer – yet the Ontario-based songwriter’s family ties – and his love for the people and places of Nova Scotia’s Northeastern Shore, made him a frequent visitor to Canso and Guysborough County. These visits inspired Stan to write songs like ‘The Jeannie C.,’ ‘Guysborough Train,’ and ‘Fogarty’s Cove’ – and they also earned Stan a place in the local folklore of the town and the region.”
The Stan Roger’s Folk Festival takes place in Canso, a small, coastal fishing town on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. Canso has a population of only 1,250 residents and is often cited as the oldest fishing port in the Maritimes as it was founded in 1604. Stan spent many summers in Canso hanging out with grandfather who was a local fisherman.
