Nova Scotia International Air Show: September 12th and 13th
Canada’s “Centennial of Flight” celebrations began with a flight by the replica of the famous Silver Dart that left the ground at Baddeck in 1909 for Canada’s first powered flight. On September 12th and 13th the skies of above Yarmouth will thunder with the Nova Scotia International Air Show.
For the first time the vaunted air show will appear at a place other than Halifax Stanfield International Airport or CFB Shearwater, namely Yarmouth. This means no commercial traffic to crowd the skies and less time and money spent on security so the costs are significantly lower having it in Yarmouth.
There will be 20 aircraft on the ground for spectators to inspect including the huge C-5 Galaxy, an aircraft that the Canadian Air Force has on order. this also includes helicopters, jet fighters and transports from the American and Canadian forces.
There will be two stars this year:
PBY-5A Canso: The twin brother of the American Catalina Flying Boat this amphibious craft was on the front line of U-boat hunters during World War II. James MCCrae, a former Canso pilot, will be on hand as the honourary chairman of the event. This aircraft is owned and maintained by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
F-86 Sabre Jet: As the premier Allied fighter in the Korean War and front-line fighter in Europe in the 1950′s against the Soviets the Super Sabre was also the craft chosen for the Golden Hawks, the forerunner of the Canadian Forces’ Snowbirds aerobatic team.
