World Canoe Championships in Dartmouth Draw Big Crowds
The 2009 ICF World Canoe Championships attracted thousands of spectators to Dartmouth’s Lake Banook last weekend. On the watery stage were hundreds of the best paddlers in the world, powerhouses on their sport. The area around Lake Banook had a carnival aura after the races were through for the day. Bands began at sunset and the people partied on the hill.
The event began with a Parade of Flags, the participating countries paddling down the lake, their canoes sporting their respective country’s flags. After the area got dark a brilliant display of fireworks thundered in the enclosed area of the lake, the closest many people will ever get to a pyrotechnics display.
The races could clearly be seen from many vantage points around the lake and the best thing was the admission was free.
Not only did Dartmouth show the whole its venue could compete with Olympic courses the city had one thing that no other paddling event could have: it was in Nova Scotia.
