The tent city on Lake Banook

The tent city forming on Lake Banook

When world-class ski competitions are mentioned they always mention the town or city where the meets will be held. For example, an announcer may say, ” She had a great run in Grenoble . . .” And they almost never say France afterward because everyone in the sport knows where it is. This the same with Lake Louis or Whistler. It’s always the town that stands out.

When Jose Perurena made the welcoming address for the ICF races being held next week on Lake Banook he didn’t have to say North America, Canada or even Nova Scotia. Everyone on the world who has anything to do with paddling may not exactly where Dartmouth is located. However, rest assured they that he or she knows that Dartmouth is a world-class paddling destination and that anyone from the canoe clubs on Lake Banook in Dartmouth will be a formidable adversary. This is why so many paddlers are excited to be racing here, in the backyard of champions.

With a world paddling power like Hungary having a total paddling population of only 3,000 the fact that Banook Lake has 1,200 paddlers from 4 canoe clubs is quite extraordinary.  Starting in 1846, when a small river was dammed up to provide a lock system for the Schubenacadie Canal, Lake Banook has served canoe enthusiasts. With a $4.5 million upgrade a new course with 10 new  lines, 800 buoys and 54 docks.  In addition there was a new racing center built.

Beside the competition, Canoe 09 will be an opportunity to show off Dartmouth and showcase some great festival events:
