The Incredible Picnic: Select Nova Scotia Has Great Food!
Select Nova Scotia is an association of food producers and distributors who believe that people in Nova Scotia, and all in all countries, should begin to support their local food growers. And in celebration of their wares they are throwing a huge picnic, which is actually a series of picnics, on August 23rd.
This picnic is not a money grab by local farmers determined to grab every dollar they can. It is a shot of common sense when our food supply is, in reality, controlled by multinational corporations.
After the financial events of the past two years the world is suddenly waking up to the fact that we can’t rely on food grwon inother parts of the country and the world. What started out as just tropical fruit many years ago has turned into an industry that supplies cheap food, no matter where is comes from or with what it is sprayed.
However, new realities have been pointed out to economists since the price of oil went p to $150 a barrel, and one of these truths is that there comes a point in the price of fuel where propelling thousands of tons of steel across the ocean just to carry cheap food is no longer viable. In other words, as the supply of fuel goes down and the price keeps going up the word “local” will take on a whole new meaning.
Here is the schedule:
Sunday August 23rd, 2009 from 11 am – 3 pm, everyone is to make a picnic lunch from local foods being sold by farmers and restaurants at the picnic sites detailed in the information. There will be great food products from which to choose and the party atmosphere will be there with kids games and live music.
