“I am writing to personally invite you to join us for fish and chips and an informal ukulele jamming session on the banks of the Mersey River in Liverpool.”

- John Leefe, Mayor of the Region of Queens in Nova Scotia

Spock Days/GalaxyFest in Vulcan Alberta

Everyone knows that Paul McCartney was born and brought up in Liverpool, England. Not only that, this is the city on the Mersey River where the Beatles became famous and the town shed its image as a seaport and into the “Home of the Beatles.”

In Queen’s County on Nova Scotia’s South Shore is a beautiful spot on the Mersey River called, oddly enough, Liverpool. It doesn’t take an historian to figure out that this river and burgh was named after its counterpart in England. Only Liverpool, Nova Scotia built up a prominent history of its own during the days of the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It was called “The port of the privateers,” skilled sea warriors on small, fast ships who attacked anything with an American flag.

Today, the Region of Queen’s mayor, John Leefe, has another mission. He wants Paul McCartney to come and visit Nova Scotia’s Liverpool. Mayor Leefe has written to invite “Macca” down “the long and winding road” to Liverpool for fish and chips and a chance to strum a ukulele at the 3rd Annual Ukulele Ceilidh.

This idea is not as far-fetched as it seems. Someone in the small town of Vulcan, Alberta figured out that Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame was from the planet Vulcan and pushed for a theme for the small prairie town. Here s a clip from its website:

“The town of Vulcan sits in the heart of Vulcan County on the edge of the Canadian badlands in southern Alberta. Vulcan is recognized around the world for its coincidental science fiction relationship to ‘Star Trek’ and Mr. Spock’s home planet.”

In fact it lobbied to have the opening of the new Star Trek movie there, a request that had the backing of Leonard Nimoy himself.

Whatever you may think of Mayor Leefe’s request of Sir Paul it can’t hurt the tourism industry in the South Shore. Because Vulcan Alberta has spun off into space with the Spock Days/ GalaxyFest Star Trek Convention that draws in “Trekkies” from around the world.

Could Mayor Leefe being thinking of staging an annual Paul McCartney/Beatles Fest complete with a ukelele slant?

I’m all for it and think Paul should visit but not invite the Klingons – they’re nothing but trouble. Though of all of the Trek aliens they seemed like they knew best how to party. Maybe they like the Beatles too, who knows!
