Cruising Cape Breton

Submitted by Kim on Saturday, 6 June 2009No Comment

fiddleYou wouldn’t normally think of Canada as a cruise destination let alone the island of Cape Breton. However, right the heart of Nova Scotia’s  Cape Breton Island there is a modern and scenic cruise port right in the town of Sydney. And this is a great drop-off point  for exploring the rugged coastline and forested areas of the island as well as the town itself and Fortress Louisbourg, and 18th Century fortification complete with people dressed up in period clothing.

The cruise ships stop at the east side of Sydney Harbour using a long, protected inlet at Sydney’s newly-renovated cruise facilities.  The Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion, as it is called, welcomes passengers, trade shows visitors and other tourists and houses concerts and galleries. As well, this is where cruisers can pick up tours during their stay. In addition a well-maintained and informative tourism centre is located in the pavilion. In addition, the world’s biggest fiddle is there to greet you!

Transportation: Waiting at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion are taxis and organized shore excursions booked through the ship. For those staying on the island the best way to get around is by renting vehicles, which can also be organized from the cruise pavilion.

Tours: Mini-bus tours also offer 8 hour rides through the island

Attractions: The best attractions are scenic drives through the Islands interior and Fortress Louisbourg. In addition Cape Breton Highlands National Park has both high plateaus and the famous winding coastal road Cabot Trail, which is also popular for mountain bikers and hikers.

Shopping:

The Cape Breton Centre for Crafts and Design: This is a great place for souvenirs, although look for small gift shops with authentic folk art are  and CD’s of original music are hard to resist.

The Mayflower Mall and the Sydney Shopping Centre: These are larger shopping complexes for more practical purchases. .

Excursions:

  • Visit Baddeck village
  • Explore the Fortress of Louisbourg
  • Go underground at the Miner Museum
  • Brave the water at Ingonish Beach
