tourism nova scotia, nova scotia vacationsOne of the best parts about living in Dartmouth is the number of lakes within easy walking distance. Coincidentally, it is called the “City of Lakes” and should also be called the “City of Champions” because so many great paddlers have trained here.

Lake Banook, one of the best natural racecourses in the world, is just seeing new upgrades completed in preparation for the ICF World Senior Canoe Championships taking place Aug. 12 to 16, 2009. These upgrades include a brand new course with 10 new lines and 800 new buoys; two land-based judges’ towers; refurbished abutments and a new, permanent training facility.

The last time the course was upgraded in Lake Banook was more than 40 years ago in preparation for the 1969 Canada Summer Games. This new course will help the paddling and rowing community in Atlantic Canada as well as attract international competitions to Lake Banook. To complete both the course improvements and a new sewer trunk line Lake Banook was lowered.

The World Championships will be a boon to Nova Scotia tourism affecting the whole of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Volunteers are needed so take advantage of this great experience contact Canoe ’09
