Oshan Whale Watch: Whale of a Tale
Everyone likes whales. And when you are up close to nature’s largest creatures it makes you feel a little more insignificant, more humble in their presence. Whether it’s at Seaworld in Florida or out on the Pacific shoals the sight of such large creatures moving effortlessly through the water has an effect on almost everyone.
It is no secret that one of the best places in the world to watch whales is Cape Breton. Why? Because it is situated both in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean where there are are so many different species. And up in Cape Breton Oshan Whale Watch makes sure that every adventurer gets a full portion of whale excitement. And what separates Oshan Whale Watch from many other whale watching tours is that they guarantee sightings of whales. There is even a video display including their “pet” Scratchy, the Humpback Whale.
In operation since 1998 Oshan Whale Watch is a family business run by Captain Cyril Fraser – whose Gaelic clan name is Oshan. The Fraser’s have made a living from fishing in the north part of Cape Breton for over 5 generations.
Like his predecessors Captain Cyril started out as fisherman at the age of 15 and by 20 had his own lobster boat and license. When the cod stocks declined in the late 1980′s Fraser decided to start Oshan Whale Watch and has been at it ever since.
A Family Tradition
- Fraser’s wife, Sharon: She works as the bookkeeper and receptionist for Oshan Whale Watch, is great to the passengers can be found cooking fish dishes for them.
- Oldest daughter Sherry: Along with her husband Chad are the advertising and graphic design handlers.
- Oldest son, Ray: Like his father, Ray is a trained captain but also is the family web master and computer guy.
- Second youngest son, Matthew: He also works in reception and and guide.
- Youngest Fraser, Cheryl: She loves the water too much to be stuck in a booth so she is a guide.

Seeing a humpback whale is just amazing – so huge yet so graceful in the water. I am a bit of a softy so the couple of times I saw a whale I got all emotional.

Hi Adeje,
Glad you had a great experience seeing whales. Sometimes they don’t come out to play.

Rumrunner Suite at White Point Vacation Home is a Smuggler’s Delight!
White Point Vacation Home is gearing up for the 2011 holiday season with the inauguration of the Rumrunner Suite, a single bedroom apartment built on a smuggler’s theme. This is because the home was built by a real, live liquor smuggler who operated out of Hunt’s Point wharf during the Prohibition era in the United States.
