Last year big gas prices and a teetering economy penetrated the Nova Scotia tourism industry. Ian Fairclough of the Halifax Chronicle-Herald put together some sobering numbers. But, believe it not, things are looking a lot better for 2009.

Two million-one hundred-thousand (2,100,000) people came to Nova Scotia last year and here is the breakdown:

Cruise Ships: 228 to Halifax and 76 to Cape Breton

Campgrounds: 785,000 site nights sold – + 5%

Accommodations

  • South Shore: 189,000: +1%
  • Halifax: 1,400,000: +4%
  • Eastern Shore: 24,000: +1%
  • Cape Breaton: 398,9000:  -4%
  • Northumberland Shore: 197,000: -1%
  • Funday and Annapolis Valley: 341,000: -3%
  • Yarmouth and Acadian Shore: 66,000: +1%

National Parks

  • Halifax Citadel: 153,000: +5%
  • Alexander Graham Bell Museum: 71,000: -3%
  • Cape Breton Highlands: 99,000: -4%
  • Fortress Louisbourg: 93,000: -5%
  • Kejimkujik: 41,000: -8%

The good news is that many tourism partners have embraced the new social media forms and are tweeting to beat the band. So let’s see what next year brings.
