Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk Getting Upgrades
Just in time for the tourism season the wharf and boardwalk behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, a major visitor attraction for Halifax, will get much-needed repairs. In addition this refit will generate additional jobs during a recessionary time as more than $1 million will be spent in and around the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The project will take about five months to complete bt will not interfere with the large influx of visitors in July and August . This means that access to the boardwalk behind the museum will be closed from the waterfront visitor information centre to the end of the museum’s north side.
Government Quote
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Bill Dooks, announced that, “The provincial government has committed to stimulating job growth and economic investment in its Building for Growth plan. This project builds on that commitment by generating immediate employment and economic activity in Halifax’s downtown core.”
The Scope of the Project
- Replacement of the wharves’ structural supports.
- Re-decking of both the wharves and the boardwalk directly behind the museum
- Removal and reconstruction of the museum’s south boat shed (currently used in the summer months as a secondary gift shop)
The exact dates of the closure will be from June 30 to August 16. The boardwalk will reopen to accommodate the 2009 Tall Ships Festival and the 2009 Buskers Festival.
Throughout the project pedestrians will be re-routed around the museum building and along Lower Water Street. In addition the museum’s gift shop will be closed and wahrf bookings ceased until the boardwalk reopens.
