We Have Our Own Fly!
Before anyone gets excited about the fact that there may be horrendous clouds of annoying flies that settle and bit let me set you straight. They are called black flies and they are a spring and early summer pest. However, I’m talking about a fly-fishing fly, the kid that hooks unsuspecting fish.
Sport fishing in Nova Scotia is not only a pastime it’s big business. In fact last year it brought $83 million into the Nova Scotia economy. And in these times this is nothing to sneeze at. To help this industry along the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters supported a contest for Nova Scotia’s official fly.
Now, i have an old fly-tying vice. In fact I made it myself in metal shop in Grade 9. So fly fishing was part of my early days in British Columbia. It started with a non-barbed hook, some colored chenille, buck tail hair, pheasant feathers and other assorted materials that I would put together to come up with the best fly for a certain creek. This is what Bill Carpan of Stillwater must have been doing when he produced the winning fly for the promotion of sport fishing in Nova Scotia. The “Nova Scotia Classic is tied in a classic salmon pattern” with black, red, white, blue, gold and silver to represents different parts of the province. Better yet, it catches fish!
Now, here’s the catch: Because the fly is not a living thing it cannot be designated as “official.” This why it is classed as being “offically recognized in the legislature.” For more infomration contact: Nova Scotia Sport Fishing or Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

i would love to be able to learn how to do this.
