Tourism Technology.com, tiansSeven months ago, on June 29, 2007, the Canadian government through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the four provincial government departments responsible for tourism and four provincial tourism industry associations announced the progress of Tourism Technology.com (TT.com). This is basically of “smarting up”of tourism operators by introducing them to technologies for attracting tourism dollars.

Established back in 2000, TT.com “the project focuses on the development and delivery of curriculum that will better position operators to make educated decisions about their business practices and bring their technology usage to an even higher level.” This was the government statement based ion the statistics that 70% of potential
Nova Scotia and our neighbouring provinces expand their abilities to target their customers online as well.”

The governments and players have alreay committed around $750,000 for the project but will it succeed? Don Cudmore, Chair of the TT.com committee announced that, “The Technology Resource Coordinator is in place to advise tourism operators on how they can improve their websites to become more competitive in the industry.”

One Technology Resource Coordinator (TRC) is employed through TT.com in each province. The TRC’s are trained to evaluate the existing online presence of a website and to create a checklist with tourism operators to help them move to the next level in technology practices – online, real-time inventory capabilities. The TRC’s are also well-known throughout their respective regions and will take on a mentoring role, delivering the curriculum during one-on-one sessions to tourism operators who sign up through their respective provincial associations.

Here’s how it works in Nova Scotia: A tourism operator in this province will be provided with one on one training with Michelle Sears, TIANS Technology Resource Co-ordinator, a manual, a powerpoint presentation, and a model web site. The cost of the half day one on one training and all educational materials is $114.00, tax included.

For those operators interested they are encouraged to contact:Michelle Sears, TIANS Technology Co-ordinator, (902) 496-7481, or michelle_sears@tians.org
