Space Tourism in Cape Breton

Submitted by Kim on Saturday, 26 January 200811 Comments

It seems that the Canadian government is still looking into the funding $45 million as its share for a rocket launching facility in Cape Breton that would see the birth of “Space Tourism” in the province of Nova Scotia.

The funding is supposed to come from the proceeds of a special agreement the federal government made with U.S. aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin as a condition when signing a $3.2-billion contract last year  to purchase 17 Hercules C130J cargo planes and 3 Galaxy C-5 super transports from the American aerospace giant. Lockheed, in return, has agreed to spend an undisclosed amount of money on regional projects in Canada.

One of the projects Lockheed has offered to invest in is a $150-million tentative plan to build a commercial launch pad in Cape Breton that would send rockets into space to service space stations and carry tourists.

Canandian Arrow’s Prototype Rocket, von braunThe project is headed by Chicago’s PlanetSpace Inc. which in tandem with Canadian Arrow of Ontario has a goal of sending 2,000 tourists into space within the next 5 years. PlanetSpace is a commercial partner of NASA with plans to open private launching sites in other areas as well.

How much? Try $250,000 US a person!

At an Open House on January 9th and 10th in Promontory, Utah PlanetSpace showed off their wares and admitted that the idea of space tourism is still on the table. However no firm date for beginning the project was mentioned.

It seems that Canadian Arrow has been studying the blueprints for Wernher von Braun’s V2 rockets in designing their prototype for a launch unit.

We can only hope that people in this province keep thinking up these grand schemes. It’s what makes the tourism game in Nova Scotia an amazing ride!

Doesn’t the government have better things to do with their money than using to help out a tourism business by building a launch facility?

Wow… that would be cool. I thought richard branson was going to be the first to offer space tourism. Or maybe he was planning on making it the first to provide space tourism cheaply!

Space tourism would certainly beat a day trip in Scarborough in the rain. I too thought Richard Branson was going to run the Virgin (sorry) flight, with Victoria Principal of Dallas fame as one of his guests.
