Ice Fishing in Southwest Nova Scotia

White Point Beach Resort, Nova ScotiaFish caught during the winter from frigid water has an entirely different taste and texture than fish caught during the summer months. For this reason, many anglers gear up and cut a hole in the ice of many rivers throughout Canada. In Nova Scotia, one of the greatest spots to set up a shack and dangle a line is the LaHave River in Lunenburg County.

The Nova Scotia Smelt Fishing Tournament is in its 23rd year. Martin Bell, ( icefish@tallships.ca ) Chairperson for the tournament, promises unparalleled fun. This annual event takes place in early February at Conquerall Bank, Lunenburg County.

Viewing the design and artistry of the shacks is an event unto itself, so grab your camera and capture a real taste of Nova Scotia . But if you’re seeking some real adventure, bring your own shack, drop a line, and test your prowess against some of the more seasoned veterans! The entry fee is only ten dollars per person with cash awards offered for things like best smelt shack, largest smelt caught. There are a host of other related activities which are just as much fun.

With concerts, contests, and activities for adults and children alike, it’s a great way to break up the winter. Martin will be happy to offer further information at his email address.

Smelt are small fish that resemble trout and school in tidal areas. They only grow to about 4 -6 inches long and are usually caught in nets. When I was a kid we used volleyball nets with floats.
