The Lighthouse Route – Nova Scotia
The Lighthouse Route begins in Halifax and winds down the south edge of the harbor past the historic York Redoubt, Portuguese Cove and out to picturesque Peggy’s Cove, home of the famed lighthouse with its own postal code. This is the coastal beauty and historic charm that has captured the hearts and minds of travellers for generations. The landscape has barely changed since the days when Champlain and de Monts first arrived four centuries ago.Follow shoreline roads around St. Margarets’ Bay to Chester, a famous retreat for vacationers for a hundred years. Mahone Bay is next and then the World Historic site of Lunenburg, home of the Bluenose schooner.
The Lighthouse Route then bends around Bridgewater down the Lahave River where the past is a part of everyday life. Explore towns like Liverpool, with its privateer legends, and where a working blacksmith still plies his trade amidst the beautifully preserved buildings of the old town district. White Point Beach Resort is next. Then Lockporte, Shelburne and Barrington are vessels to the past while maintaining modern facilities.
The final lighthouse is at Cape Forchu, in Yarmouth, where you can sit out on the rocks and watch the modern Bay Ferries Cat approach with another group of tourists wanting to go up the Lighthouse Route.
